New Orleans Jazz (now simply called Jazz or American Jazz) is the most requested music at the White House by foreign Heads of State. Most Europeans that get this idealistic view of America and its music artist, is due to their love of New Orleans Jazz Music. Foreign Heads of State, do not want to hear Ludacris, P-diddy, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Aerosmith or any of this other mess; they WANT JAZZ!
I am not taking anything away from performers like Jennifer Hudson(who is set to perform at the White House State Dinner), being that I know she is the new Hollywood Aunt Jamama(big, fat and greasy) but Obama is awkward, at best, when it comes to dealing with world leaders. These people do not know or want to hear Jennifer Hudson-they are asking for Jazz musicians and Jazz music. The White House needs to get with the program. No one wants to hear an over-rated, one hit wonder, American Idol singer from Chicago. Yes, she can sing her butt off but when your 300lbs. you should be able to carry a note.
I do not understand why the White House, just doesn't book Jazz musicians around the clock because Jazz is the most requested musical art-form by visiting Heads of State!
Jazz music was developed in New Orleans (not other Southern cities as many resources report) in the early 20th century. Black and Creole artist, many illiterate, had a natural talent for picking up classical European instruments and throwing together sexy, upbeat and moving musical arrangements, that sounded really good, to both white & black Americans. The love affair that white Americans had with black and Creole Jazz artist is very well documented.
White folks would flock to jazz clubs in New Orleans, Chicago and New York(following the migration of New Orleans Creoles during the industrial boom)-just to hit the jazz scene. The famous black author/writer, Langston Hughes, wrote about life in Harlem during the 1960's and he always included a character named "Creole" when he would write about the N.Y. jazz scene-even though he had a very low opinion of black jazz/blues musicians, in many of his short stories.
In my reading of Langston Hughes I could only conclude, he wrote in such negative terms of blacks, in order to get published by the elite newly-white Jewish N.Y. literary society and of course he is celebrated but much of his writing is coon-ish. Hughes' writings is very back-handed and even hostile towards black culture and of course every college professor, would throw Langston Hughes at me for an assignment and I would get "C's" (even though I was an A student) because I didn't follow the academic consensus of him being a great American Literature writer.
Imagine sitting in a class-room, with a white female professor, raised in a California suburb, teaching a Creole from New Orleans, that jazz started at the Cotton Club in New York City! First, the Cotton Club was full of black-face coons who put on a show for spectators and even though I politely provided the documentations showing the origins of jazz-she developed a grudge against me and it cost me my Grade Point Average! But, this is how it goes in American Universities, where students are routinely mis-educated on history. Later, the Professor was removed due to a substance abuse problem from the institute. It was just typical. It is typical of Americans to walk around with double degrees and still be stupid and mis-educated because they don't fact check their professors and will take their professor's ignorance as law; and the cycle of American ignorance marches on and on in this country.
To play classical music, required one to be highly literate because you have chords, which deal with mathematics, beats and chord continuity. Being that many blacks weren't educated due to laws in the U.S. banning blacks from educational institutes and most male Creoles, had to be shipped off to France, in order to received a proper education-what was left in Louisiana were these Black and Creole men, who knew blue-collar trades but also had a knack for music-even though it was undeveloped.
Jazz is now something that is teachable, because you just add an extra note to a musical chord but New Orleans Jazz is the only music that is 100% American. With Jazz music, you keep in certain Jazz chords but you play the music, and do not let the music play you.
Before the U.S. media exploitation of blacks in the U.S.(criminals, thugs, HIV infected drug dealers), most white Europeans viewed blacks as these super talented entertainers who taught the world to sing, dance and make beautiful music.
What every White House official, who is in charge of entertaining foreign diplomats and Heads of State, soon realizes is that New Orleans Jazz is always the music of choice for those visiting America and they have to get educated on Jazz, very quickly, to look like a good host or hostess.
This week President Obama is entertaining many foreign Heads of State, and once again, they are all demanding Jazz music!
My New Orleans Jazz teacher was a white guy from Algiers, and that man could get down with Jazz. He was Super talented but he never played jazz without teaching his students, how jazz was formed in New Orleans and how it came about. Jazz isn't just for blacks or Creole men in New Orleans, because I have heard some white jazz musicians that are simply phenomenal and this is due to American being a true melting pot.
Just another tid-bit of history on how New Orleans helped America become a land of greatness and mythical admiration.
